Extracurricular Activities

Teachers and Teacher Assistant have formed a group in hopes of coming up with extracurricular activities for students in grades 6-12 that would prove to be inexpensive to the parent or school budget. The much needed activities would help get students more involved with other peers and help those who are in need of social skills develop, so that they can communicate in society without being affraid or know what to say.

Your suggestions would help to determine what activities are best and beneficial to the students and at the same time inexpensive to parents and school budget. To start the discussion/suggestion, I recommend a club that I started three years ago.

-- MHS Bigbrother Bigsister Club; the club involves high school juniors and seniors. They are mentors to elementary students in grades 4th and 5th. Once or twice a week the students meet with their mentees to eat lunch in the school cafeteria or play games with them during their recess time. Once a month on Saturday's field trips are conducted, which gives the mentor and mentees quilty time together to just relax and have fun. It's at no cost to student or parent; fundraisers are conducted to raise money for field trips and purchase of tee shirts.

  1. Lisa,
I have a great idea, already! I just finished a scavenger hunt activity. You could make one that is Science-based, as mine, or create your own. If you can't come up with any ideas, there are a ton of Web resources...let the kids decide the "theme." Great idea to link the parents, teachers, and students all together for some good old-fashioned collaboration:) Virginia
